|Secured By Design|
Secured by Design is the official UK Police flagship initiative supporting the principles of ‘designing out crime’. The scheme focuses on the prevention of crime to domestic and commercial properties and promotes the use of security standards for a whole range of applications and specific products.
Having a fire door correctly installed by specialists is vital to their performance.
Using a FIRAS certificated company ensures that installers, assessed by FIRAS for their competence, will be adequately supervised and will only use appropriate fire doors within their tested and approved scope.
FIRAS installers are required to maintain records of every contract undertaken and to inform FIRAS of all contracts so that random inspections of the installation work can be undertaken. On completion the company will issue a certificate of conformity and apply a discrete label to the door with contact details.
Having such products fitted by a FIRAS certificated installer provides confidence to all parties in the door’s ability to maintain its designed performance.
Construction Line is a Government run scheme. Each month thousands of contractors and consultants apply for work with public and private sector organisations. In order to be awarded the relevant contract, the companies and individuals applying must meet health and safety standards.
To avoid each individual contract having to assess individual suppliers’ health and safety competence, the Construction Line Scheme has been developed.
Construction Line assesses applicants on their health and safety policy statement, their organisation and how it deals with health and safety and their specific health and safety arrangements. This means that everyone will work to an acceptable standard. All members of the Construction Line scheme are stored on a database which is accessible by members only.

Certass Limited is a UKAS approved certification body for the operation of a Competent Person Scheme under a Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) license and a Green Deal Certification Body under licence from the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
They provide services such as mediation support should there be a dispute between the customer and an installer. Certass became licensed in 2006.
Certass are a not-for-profit scheme. Both are self-certification schemes, both were set up in response to Government legislation, both are UKAS approved with both being able to boast about half a dozen other logos and accreditations each.
On a final note I would say that both are doing their very best to make sure the industry works to all the laws and regulations that govern this industry. Without them, our sector would be in more difficult waters than we find right now.
